The present invention generally relates to a process for preparation of a clay mineral-organic hybrid. The hybrid composition comprises of a clay mineral and indole based organic dye. This composition exhibits reversible colour switching behaviour upon heating and swelling of clay material with high repeatability. This kind of composition may have potential applications as a colorimetric sensor and in the field of optics i.e. optical switching and optical memory.
